A 14-year-old has been charged after police said he and a group of other juveniles set a sleeping man on fire Sunday in Annandale, Va., in an attempt to rob him of his backpack.
The teen was charged with attempted robbery and malicious wounding after the incident, which occurred in the 4500 block of Commons Drive about 2:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Officers were called after a report of several people assaulting and attempting to rob a man, police said. Officers found that the man’s clothing and backpack had been burned, police said.
An investigation found that several juveniles planned to rob the man as he slept, police said. The man awoke to the juveniles setting his backpack on fire. He was treated for injuries to his upper body and was released from a hospital.
The 14-year-old was arrested Sunday, and police are working to identify the other juveniles. The Washington Post generally does not name juveniles charged with crimes unless they are charged as adults. Police said they do not think the case is gang-related.
