Government shutdown is a failure with many fathers

On Saturday, President Trump, typically making a crisis about himself, tweeted, “This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present. #DemocratShutdown.”

It’s a present he picked himself: In a May tweet, he declared: “Our country needs a good shutdown in September to fix mess!” He was off by four months, as the federal government ground to a halt Saturday when Congress failed to reach a spending agreement.

It’s a failure with many fathers — presidential incoherence, Republican recklessness and Democratic miscalculation.

Trump fomented the crisis: He unilaterally ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, removing deportation protections from 800,000 Dreamers. Worse, he blew up a bipartisan deal he requested — leading his own Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to declare, “As soon as we figure out what (Trump) is for, then I would be convinced that we were not just spinning our wheels.”

Trump’s anniversary in office arrives with government shutdown

For his part, McConnell is part of a Republican congressional leadership recklessly governing crisis to crisis for nearly a decade — including not passing a full budget this year. That said, with 60 Senate votes needed to avoid a shutdown (and only 51 Republicans), Chuck Schumer’s Democrats could have stopped things from going over the cliff. There are six weeks to resolve DACA. Given that Democrats got one major priority — a six-year extension of the CHIP children’s health program — they should have taken Friday’s deal.

Alas, they’re now showing the same sort of intransigence they decried in Republicans during 2013’s shutdown. Democrats believe in governing. Hold off on DACA for another day.
